From
The West:
Take I-40 to exit #289. Follow signs for Wade Avenue
until St. Mary's Street (about 6 miles). Turn right on St. Mary's
Street and follow it about 1 mile to Hillsborough Street. Turn left
on Hillsborough Street. John Montgomery Inc. is located 2 ‡
blocks on the right side between Glenwood Avenue and West
Street.
From The East:
Take I-64 West, which becomes New
Bern Avenue in Raleigh. New Bern Avenue becomes Edenton Street at
which point it is a one way street going west. After the State
Capitol Building and its square turn left on Salisbury Street and
immediately right on Hillsborough Street. John Montgomery Inc. will
be 5 blocks on the left between West Street and Glenwood Ave.
From
The North:
Take I-85 to Henderson, N.C. and follow Route 1 South
to Raleigh. Route 1, also called Capital Boulevard, becomes Dawson
Street. After the octagonal Holiday Inn turn right on Hillsborough
Street. John Montgomery Inc. will be in the third block on the left
between West Street and Glenwood Avenue.
From The South:
Take
either I-70 or I-40 to the I-440 beltline and take the South Saunders
Street Downtown exit #298. Follow South Saunders Street to McDowell
Street and turn left on Hillsborough Street. John Montgomery will be
4 blocks on the left between West Street and Glenwood Avenue.

and Goods
John Montgomery Inc. has a complete
inventory of violins, viola and violoncellos and bows. Each
instrument and bow is carefully examined for quality in all aspects
to guarantee value. Our restorers are fully trained and work to the
highest standards. We also stock a large selection of accessories
including strings, cases, stands, shoulder rests and rosins. Our
selection of sheet music includes solo and accompanied works as well
as method books.
About
Us
John Montgomery
is fully trained in
both instrument making and restoration and has been working since
1977 when he began as a Watson Fellow studying Hurdy Gurdy
construction in France. He attended the Violin Making School of
America in Salt Lake City, Utah and trained under William Monical in
New York City. He has been am member of the American Federation of
Violin and Bow Makers since 1987. In 1983 he established John
Montgomery Inc. in Raleigh, North Carolina. His instruments continue
to be played by professional musicians. Recent instruments include a
violoncello based on a 1700 Goffriller, and two violins copying a
1704 Stradivari and 1733 Guarneri del Gesu.
Charles Nelson,
graduate of Red Wing School in Minnesota, continued instrument
making building guitars in the shop of Ron Pinkham in Glen Cove,
Maine. He has been employed at John Montgomery Inc. since 1990
restoring and making violins.
Brian Kelly
is a graduate of
the Violin Making School of America in Salt Lake City, Utah, having
joined John Montgomery Inc. in 1998. He is a trained restorer and
currently builds violins based on a Stradivari model.
Freda
Kerr
joined John Montgomery Inc. in 1992 as bookkeeper and
receptionist. Her knowledge of accessories and sheet music is
extensive and thus she is of great assistance to any musician's
search for these items.
Instruments
and Bows
In addition to the instruments made
in our shop a variety of new and old instruments are also available.
Since our inventory is constantly changing we suggest contacting us
with your demands and specific instruments can be discussed. Our bow
selections always includes fine works from old French, English and
German makers as well as a broad selection of bows by contemporary
makers.
